'Corporates run the film business.' - Aditya Om

Aditya Om is a renowned actor, director, and writer that has been a part of the film fraternity for the last 19 years. Over the years, the performer has been involved in the various gamut of functions pertaining to the film business. His movies have been lauded in various film festivals, including his soon to be released, and highly appreciated film, 'Maassab (The Teacher)' which is doing the rounds and is getting praises.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with him, and here are moments from our discussion:

Q: How do you feel after working in the business for such a long time?

A: It's been an enriching journey, and I feel glad about working with various film industries.

Q: The world of movies has evolved since you started working, and how do you feel about this change?

A: Change is inevitable, and while some of us weren't able to adapt to changes, the people that are able to work in accordance with the latest advancements have seen better days.

Q: With Amazon Prime and NetFlix becoming the mode to watch movies, do you think this hampers the film business?

A: Indeed, the business has changed, and with less attention span, people watch movies online, because they can watch it anytime, anywhere. Although the film business has seen a hit, there are people that are visiting cinema halls. The movies of different languages have been garnering good value from all types of people.

Q: Do you think that corporates are making movies while the real producers are not in the picture?

A: I solely believe that a lot goes into movie making, and corporates believe in making movies that start from minimum 10 crores. They have white collared people that are only bothered about money, and not the impact of it.

Q: With Badhai Ho and Andhadhun being a hit, do you think that subject is becoming the key?

A: Movies have a story and a subject, but with time, the same has changed. I believe in good cinema, and the movies mentioned above are just a representation of what we used to see in tv serials.

Q: Do you think that the way to make movies has become easier?

A: Indeed, we have mobile phones that have a good resolution, and a lot of us have become content creators due to this. Bhuvan Bam is one example of this, while there are many others that are planning to make it big.

Q: With Maassab getting good reviews, do you think this will be the game changer for your career?

A: I have worked with many people in my career, but the freedom I got while making Maassab has helped me create good content. With no poking producer, I got the opportunity to showcase my acumen which is one of the reasons why the movie is getting lauded.

Q: Do you think corporates are keeping film creators confined?

A: I would say to some extent yes. If famous performers don't work according to the corporate guidelines, they will not be able to get the value they attain, and that is extremely important. This is why corporates believing in launching new faces with low budgets instead of hiring a big name, and increase the cost.

Q: Will Maassab be able to get a National Award?

A: I can't predict futures, although no one would envy getting the biggest prize in the film fraternity.
